Good Goverance Stratford is looking to field at least 6 candidates (with 10 seats open) for Stratford city council in this fall’s election. We are seeking candidates with integrity and vision for our city who – once elected – will work with other Good Governance councillors (and other councillors and the mayor) to the best of their ability and abide by a core set of principles of good governance:

Public Engagement
We must have meaningful public consultation to inform council decision-making;

Transparency and Openness
Our last council won the dubious national award as the “most secretive council in Canada” for the Xinyi Glass Plant MZO. We demand an open and transparent way of doing the city’s important business;

Accountability and Trust
Our council’s lack of communication to the community on big issues in a timely manner must be reformed.
Be a candidate
Our “Good Governance candidates” will agree to work together as a team to protect participatory democracy. We want to win back the electorates trust. Dedicated volunteers will assist you and your campaign to win! Once you are elected you will not be forgotten. We will continue to offer our support as needed.
A committee of three volunteers. Mike Sullivan, Barbara Shaughnessy and Geoff Love, have agreed to help screen each candidate looking to run as a member of the Good Governance team this fall. As they are selected, current candidates will be invited to listen in on other candidate interviews, though not ask questions. We are NOT deciding whether you can run for council – that is your decision; but we do decide who runs as a Good Governance candidate.
We will also actively consult with the Good Governance Group (who helped articulate the core Good Governance principles) as we build our Good Governance Candidate team. We may select more than 6 – and even more than 10 – candidates for council. At this point, we are not looking to select a mayoral candidate, though that may change as the election nears this fall. We are looking to attract a diverse group of candidates in terms of age, gender and political experience with a strong commitment to work hard.
Our candidate selection committee will meet and interview each potential candidate to ensure you understand the principles by which we expect you to fulfill your duties as a Good Governance Council member (the 3 principles listed above). Candidate selections will be unanimous. We are looking to have a minimum of 6 Good Governance Council Candidates in place by August 1. The municipal election day this fall is October 24.

City Councillor Candidate interview questions – Spring 2022
We expect to have 45-60 minute interviews with each potential candidate. We will begin by talking about your understanding of our core principles and your vision for the city. We will also want to talk about:
-
- Why you want to run for council and what experience do you have?
- How do you plan to consult with and involve residents in decision-making?
- Are there any issues or actions from your past that can be seen as a vested or pecuniary interest?
- What time commitment do you plan for your campaign? Have you had experience raising money?
Are you willing to allow your candidacy to be part of a common slate of candidates? - Are you part of any community advocacy group? Are you active on social media? If yes, we ask each candidate to provide us with their social media contact information.
- Do you have any questions for us?
