Stratford Good Governance Group plans Public Meeting
Group targets Stratford Council election for wholesale changes!
June 22, 2022, the Stratford Good Governance Group will hold it’s second public meeting, to push ahead plans to change Stratford Council this fall. The Group formed to provide a response to the chronic secrecy of council decision making, revealed during the Glass Factory debacle. The group’s goals are to elect a council that is transparent, accountable and responsive to the residents of Stratford.
“Winning the prize for being the most secretive council in Canada is nothing to be proud of,” said group spokesperson Mike Sullivan. “Citizens are still pursuing multiple Freedom of Information requests, and Closed Meeting Investigations about that dark time from 2018 to 2021, and we are no closer to knowing what really went on behind closed doors.” Mike was part of the group that led the successful fight to stop a glass plant in Stratford.
The group plans to field a ‘slate’ of candidates who are willing to follow the group’s goals this fall. The meeting will be to further that plan, now that the provincial election is over.
‘I’ve been a candidate municipally before’, said Barb Shaughnessy, one of the group’s leaders. ‘It is a little scary at first, but it is our hope that by having a group of candidates to share the work, and share the costs, it will be relatively painless for residents who are truly interested in change at city hall”. Barb has been a municipal councillor in Caledon.
